The townspeople, especially teenagers, show gratuitous cruelty to animals and people, as well as propensities for vandalism and sexual proclivities. The film is a collection of scenes torn from life, often unrelated, but perfectly depicting the unsanitary life of the city. As an independent film, "Gummo" won awards at the 1997 Venice Film Festival and the 1997 Rotterdam Film Festival 1998.
